The Church – Called To Minister To Gen Z

by Pastor Juan Feliciano

Generation Z, which is often referred to as Gen Z, is made up of individuals that were born between 1997 and 2012, which as of 2025 fall in the 13-28 age range. This is a generation that has grown up with a plethora of technology and information that is readily available to them. Much of this fascinating technology has been created by Baby Boomers or a previous generation. It is because of their exposure to such an abundance of technology that they have been inundated with information that we are aware has been skewed and even distorted by man. This scenario has had an impact on their lives to the point of creating concerns in which they grown up with. These concerns are real and can have either a positive or negative impact pending of how they are dealt with. Gen Z receives its information from multiple sources available to them and not necessarily from the traditional sources (mainstream media) that past generations have relied on.

Some of the concerns that are impacting Gen Z are concerns which are not necessarily new and have been dealt with by past generations such as economic stability. It has been said that Millennials and Gen Z may be the first generations not to have more than their previous generation. However, this could be due to poor parenting and not the current economic climate. Mental health is another pressing concern on this generation where 72% have used AI (artificial intelligence) as companionship in lieu of real people, 42% of high-schoolers have experimented sadness, 22% have dealt with suicidal thoughts and has made this generation prone to anxiety. Information and money cannot solve these issues. The list of concerns goes on with job insecurity, climate control, social justice and the gap between the poor and the rich making headway.

The bottom line is that the concerns of this generation make them ripe for the Gospel, a harvest that is ready. We know that the answer to the age-old problem of man’s sinful condition is Jesus Christ. As the writer of Ecclesiastes has put it, “there is nothing new under the sun”. Pastor Samuel Rodriguez of New Season Church in Sacramento California has pointed out that Gen Z is crying out for truth, clarity and authenticity. They want truth that can set them free, clearly exposed by scripture and people who are real and vulnerable in the approach. They are waiting for us to point the way – who is Jesus Christ! Our experiences in Christ have made us qualified. God has a beautiful plan for this generation and for those who witness Him doing amazing things with them.
